Where Gumroad starts to cost you

Gumroad's appeal is that you can be selling within an hour and pay nothing until money comes in. The 10% cut on the free plan is the price of that convenience, and at low volume it is a fair deal. The arithmetic changes as revenue grows, because a percentage of every transaction scales with your success rather than with your usage. Somewhere past a few hundred pounds a month, most sellers find that a platform charging a flat subscription plus ordinary payment processing works out cheaper — often considerably.

The second limitation is presentation. Gumroad product pages and checkout look like Gumroad. You control copy and images, but not layout, structure or the experience around the purchase, and you cannot build a proper storefront around a growing catalogue. For a single ebook that hardly matters. Once discovery, bundling and upsells start driving your revenue, it becomes a ceiling. Sellers also run into limits on how subscriptions are handled and how much customer data they can get back out.

The trade-offs that decide this category

Who is the legal seller

This is the most consequential difference and the least discussed. Lemon Squeezy operates as merchant of record: it is the legal seller, it calculates and remits sales tax and VAT on your behalf, and it carries the compliance burden. Gumroad handles tax on a similar basis, and Payhip covers EU VAT for you. Shopify and WooCommerce do not — you are the seller, and registering for and filing digital sales tax in every jurisdiction you sell into becomes your responsibility. If you sell internationally and do not have an accountant, this one factor should probably decide your shortlist.

Percentage fees versus monthly fees

Calculate your total cost at current revenue and at three times current revenue. Platforms that charge nothing upfront take a larger slice of each sale; platforms with a monthly cost take less. Add payment processing in both cases, and do not overlook currency conversion and payout fees, which are easy to miss and add up on international sales.

How much store you actually need

There is a real difference between a checkout link and a shop. Shopify gives you a full storefront, themes, discount logic and an enormous app ecosystem, which is overkill for three PDFs and exactly right for a catalogue with dozens of items and repeat customers. WooCommerce gives you the same breadth if you already run WordPress. Systeme.io comes at it from the funnel side, bundling product sales with landing pages and email in one place.

Product types beyond simple downloads

Courses, memberships, licence keys and recurring plans all have specific requirements, and this is where lightweight tools tend to fall over. Payhip includes courses and memberships without a separate subscription. Systeme.io covers courses and email sequences in its free tier. Lemon Squeezy is the strongest of these for software licensing and subscription billing.

Ownership and portability

Hosted platforms own the relationship with the payment processor and, to some degree, the customer record. WooCommerce is the opposite trade: you host it, you own the database, and you carry the maintenance, security and update work yourself. That is worth it if your store is a long-term asset you intend to control, and a distraction if you would rather be making products.

Which one suits which seller

If you sell software, templates or anything with a subscription or licence attached, and you sell across borders, Lemon Squeezy is the clearest upgrade — you keep the simplicity but hand off tax entirely. If you want the closest like-for-like replacement with a lighter fee structure and courses included, Payhip is the straightforward swap. If digital products are becoming a real business with a catalogue, bundles and repeat buyers, Shopify is built for that volume. If you already run WordPress and want to own the whole thing, WooCommerce costs nothing to install and gives you complete control. And if you are bootstrapping and would rather replace three tools at once than optimise one, Systeme.io does products, funnels and email on a free plan.

What to sort out before you move your catalogue

Recurring billing is the hard part. Card details cannot simply be handed from one processor to another, so any active subscriptions or memberships usually need customers to re-subscribe on the new platform — plan that communication carefully, and expect to lose some. Export your customer list, order history and any licence keys before you close anything down. Keep your old product URLs working with redirects if they are linked from your newsletter, social profiles or other people's articles, because those links are frequently your main source of sales. Re-download links matter too: buyers expect access to files they paid for years ago, so decide how you will honour that. Finally, keep your VAT and sales tax records from the old platform. If you are moving away from a merchant-of-record arrangement, you are now the one who has to produce them.

The bottom line

For most people leaving Gumroad over fees and tax admin, Lemon Squeezy is the strongest replacement, with Payhip the better pick if you want courses and memberships in the same place for less. If the goal is to build a proper digital storefront rather than a better checkout link, go to Shopify — or WooCommerce if owning the infrastructure matters more than convenience.
